LaTarah Edmond, owner of Good Hair Day Salon, graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism and a minor in Business Administration.

Shortly after leaving College Station, she began a five-year marketing career with a small newspaper company, CNHI (Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc.) She worked at two of the company’s newspapers, the Cleburne Times-Review and Herald-Banner Publications, holding various positions from newspaper in education coordinator to advertising director. Her duties ranged from community liaison to management. LaTarah’s work for CNHI yielded several awards from the Newspaper Association of America (NAA). She was the recipient of the NAA Minority Marketing Fellowship, the James Batten Break - Through Fellowship and a convention panelist for “Keeping Your Top People.”

In 2005, she moved her career to the larger metropolitan newspaper, The Dallas Morning News. She began as a small business account executive and was eventually promoted to custom publications specialist. She assisted local business owners in creating marketing strategies and advertising campaigns to fulfill their business objectives and grow revenue using the company’s suite of print and online products. While working at The Dallas Morning News, she developed a relationship with a business manager of an upscale beauty salon.  Her relationship and conversations with the salon business manager rekindled her childhood love for styling hair and sparked her desire to open a salon. She began attending cosmetology school at Metroplex Beauty School in Mesquite, Texas while maintaining a full time marketing career at the local metropolitan newspaper.

After graduating cosmetology school in 2008, she began styling hair part time in a small, private suite at Image Expo Salon in Arlington, Texas. In March 2010, through the implementation of an aggressive marketing plan equipped with an appealing web site, online booking, loyalty programs, frequency discounts and community partnerships, she was able to grow her clientele significantly and she chose to resign from her position at The Dallas Morning News and pursue a career in the cosmetology industry full time.  In 2012 the business continued to thrive and confirmed that she needed to expand from a 100 square foot private suite to a 1,500 square foot salon. As a young girl, LaTarah’s mother instilled in her the importance of giving back to the community.  Being a business owner of a salon allows her the opportunity to give through a channel she’s passionate about. She is known for partnering with local non-profit organizations such as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the Arlington Life Shelter, the Duncanville Outreach Ministry, Junior League of Arlington, the Arlington Foundation for Excellence in Education and the Duncanville Police Department in a host of events such as back to school backpack drives, breast cancer awareness makeovers, food and toy drives, personal hygiene kit collections and academic scholarship fundraisers.

In 2013, The Best Southwest Magazine featured her and her salon as an up and coming business in the area. In 2014 she was awarded Media Person of the Year by the Xi Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated for her role in displaying the African American community in a positive light in print and online media. In 2016, she was given the Community Stylist of the Year Award by the Chappelle Group of Primerica for her dedication to mentoring entrepreneurs. She received the Best Salon Award in 2017 at the A Night for the Stars Beauty Industry Awards and Gala. In 2018, she was selected to be in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Program, a scholarship awarded for a three-month business course equivalent to receiving a Masters’ that teaches small business owners how to create and execute a growth plan. She was awarded Who’s Who in Black Dallas in 2019, an award honoring individuals who have made a positive impact in their specific industry and community. LaTarah’s salon has been ranked in the top 10 salons for natural hair care by “Thank God I’m Natural” and “Naturally Curly,” and she has been featured on WFAA Channel 8’s Good Morning Texas and KDFW Fox 4 News as a beauty expert on make overs, hair care and styling tips.

She is currently a marketing consultant and business coach for stylists in the cosmetology industry aspiring to grow their business in class series entitled Be About the Business: A Plan for the Beauty Professional. She partners with industry leaders such as Paul Mitchell, Regency, Ogle Beauty Schools and Ben Adams of the B. Adams Corporation to coach cosmetologists in business fundamentals.

And she does all of these endeavors with the love and support of her family with a mission to leave a legacy and to be a blessing to others.

Good Hair Day

In pursuit of her life-long passion for doing hair, LaTarah Edmond left her marketing career to build Good Hair Day Salon in Duncanville, Texas. An alumnus of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program, LaTarah speaks with MCAAD president Kerry Healey about her genesis story, her difficulty in raising capital in a high-risk industry, the importance of mentorship, and her challenges during the coronavirus pandemic. "You can do it… you really can. I mean, you don't have to be a victim of your circumstances.  Whatever you can come up with, whatever passion you decide to store down in your belly, you can make it - or whatever big idea you have in your brain - you can make it come true. And I think that it's just a blessing to be in a position where you can inspire other people as well."
