Artist
Basil Kincaid
Basil Kincaid is an American artist who honors traditional craftsmanship through a diverse range of media, including quilting, collaging, photography, installation, and performance.
Using materials imbued with emotional and memorial significance, the artist treats these mediums as “spiritual technology,” reflecting the artist’s core values of family, imagination, rest, and experience. Kincaid's contemporary practice is deeply influenced by seven generations of family quilters, a personal legacy and rich tradition that continues to shape and inspire Kincaid's art.
With Flower Song: Through Dappled Shade, Dancing on Our Faces, Kincaid blends symbols, metaphors, color, and patterns to weave a rich, cosmic narrative of the American Dream. Human and animal forms come together in celebration, support, play, learning, family, and resilience. These three panels explore themes of innovation, entrepreneurship, health, and education, while also reflecting on the artist’s life and work that is embedded in the quilt-making process.
