MISS CHELOVE

Two new large-scale murals by Washington DC-based artist MISS CHELOVE flow across the grand staircase in Levels 1 and 4, creating a series of distinct stories about one’s potential and the pursuit of realizing it.

Taking inspiration from celebrated American poet Emily Dickinson, Rise (Level 4) offers a lustrous portrait of a young woman, her face determined and illuminated by the artist’s use of gold leaf. This dramatic light is a stunning visual for demonstrating the sense of optimism and resilience that are cornerstones of our collective values.

MISS CHELOVE expands on this idea in her second mural, Waves of Change: A Journey of Dreams (Level 1). She borrows the story of her mother, Sri, who journeyed from the Indonesian island of Java to the United States to pursue her education. The artist uses collages of family Kodachrome photos, archival images of historic architecture, and even her mother’s identification badge at Voice of America to commemorate her journey and legacy.
