James Truslow Adams and the History of the "American Dream"
Thursday, February 26
1:30-1:45 pm
This talk introduces visitors to the work of James Truslow Adams, the writer and scholar who first popularized the term "American Dream" in his bestselling 1931 book The Epic of America. Curator and historian Ella Wagner will discuss how Adams defined the term and its resonance for readers living through the disruptions of the Great Depression. A close look at Adams shows that Americans have been debating what the "Dream" means -- and whether it even exists -- throughout most of our history.
Program will meet in the Hall of Generations.
